:: DESIGNING FOR A DIFFERENCE ::
on Wednesday 27 May 2009 - 07:33:14 | by Quintus SmitDesigning for a difference is an issue we're all faced with ... But how do we put it into practical, daily action?
Robin Williamson (GRAPHIC DESIGN - CAPE TOWN) has come up with an inspiring idea that challenges us all to action ...
TAKING ACTON 01:
* The first idea would be to minimize the number of paper cups we use daily at Inscape (so each person would only use one cup - per day as opposed to 4!!). By doing this we're creating awareness about recycling whilst saving money & reducing wastage at the same time!!
TAKING ACTION 02:
* WITH THE CUPS WE 'RESCUE' / RECYCLE we propose to: create works of art!!
These artworks will be on display in & around the college ... And perhaps auctioned off at some point (for more information about a similar initiative please see: http://www.1000drawings.co.za/).
Taking it a step further ... we would like to propose: RECYCLED [PAPER CUP] WALLPAPER!
Why you should love this idea:
* IT'S GREEN & we ♥ RECYCLING ...
* It ties in with one of the key concepts we're trying to teach ourselves
to value: BECOME RESPONSIBLE CITIZENS!
* It's a fresh idea that promotes forward thinking
* It emphasizes the fact that we work by hand in our first year at
Inscape
* We're getting students to participate & be a part of
the Inscape brand
* It displays student work on a new, different, innovative canvas
* It's going to attract attention & generate a buzz ...
The list goes on & on ... It's simple ... just say: LIKE IT ... LOVE
IT ... NEED IT!!

Is this the largest billboard in the southern hemisphere?
on Wednesday 27 May 2009 - 07:32:26 | by Quintus SmitComutanet has taken ownership of what it believes to be the largest billboard in the southern hemisphere.
ComutaNet has branded what it reckons to be the largest billboard in the Southern Hemisphere. At 600m², the First National Bank (FNB) wall-mounted billboard, situated at Johannesburg Park Station, has surpassed the Coca-Cola billboard in Sydney, and that makes it the largest billboard in the Southern Hemisphere the agency says.
The agency says the illuminated billboard can be spotted by road users driving along Rissik Street and Nelson Mandela Bridge as well as by more than 7.8 million Metrorail and Business Express train users travelling through Park Station every month.
The billboard promotes the bank's smart cheque and savings account but what is claimed to be a unique feature, and one that is of particular significance to many commuters, is the clock counting down to 2010. The clock's aim is to communicate FNB's sponsorship of the tournament.

Recycle Art

Through sense of humor or a disturbed mind, some artists are able to take everyday objects that are broken or discarded and compose them into a visual assault. Scrap metal, wire, old toys or bottle caps are sometimes the stuff of which these fascinating nightmares are made

Sustainable Floating cities - how cool is this!
on Saturday 21 February 2009 - 07:26:46 | by Quintus SmitOriginal link: Click Me!
The Lilypad Project may be one of the most complex and forward-thinking green design projects ever conceived. Each individual ‘pad’ is structured to be a self-sustaining city that can travel the world’s oceans and rescue refugees due to disasters and rising sea levels. They would be powered by a combination of thermal, tidal, solar and wind energy and each would have a huge capacity - housing up to a half-million people a piece. The three-dimensionally complex design creates hills and valleys as well as recreational, commercial and residential spaces, giving them an organic complexity that makes them somehow believable as places where humans could live out entire lifetimes.
